Foggy Osage Orange Tunnel No. 3

The Story:      Before barbed wire became common across the Midwest, farmers often planted rows of Osage orange trees as living fences.  At Sugarcreek MetroPark between Bellbrook and Centerville, Ohio, one of these historic hedgerows has matured into the celebrated Dayton Tree Tunnel, where gracefully arching branches form a natural canopy over the trail. On this fog-filled morning, sunrise arrived quietly behind a blanket of mist. Facing east into the diffused light, I found the tunnel transformed into a scene of remarkable calm.  The soft illumination muted harsh shadows and allowed the repeating arches of green foliage to recede gently into the distance, creating an image that feels timeless and inviting.   The Rest of the Story Having photographed this tunnel beneath brilliant autumn sunrises, I wanted to experience it under entirely different conditions.  The dense morning fog changed everything. Instead of dramatic contrast, the light became soft and even, wrapping the historic trees in a quiet atmosphere that encouraged a slower pace. To complement the mood, I applied a restrained Orton Effect during processing, subtly enhancing the glow of the brighter areas while preserving the tunnel’s graceful structure.  The result reflects how the scene felt to me that morning… peaceful, dreamlike, and suspended between memory and reality.  It remains one of my most celebrated images and has resonated deeply with people who have formed their own connections to this remarkable pathway. Accolades: 2024 – a client shared she was contemplating buying a painting of a wooded pathway.  In fact, she was regretting not making that purchase, when she discovered one of my Sugarcreek MetroPark posts on social media.  She’s a frequent park visitor and was fond of walking through Dayton’s tree tunnel.   For her, she was able to blend the aesthetics of a forest footpath with a park that she cherishes. 2022 – the 32nd annual Dayton-area Works on Paper exhibition, Rosewood Gallery, Kettering, Ohio.   One of Two Juried prints (54 accepted) from 200 submissions.  This print won an award and serves as the exhibit’s featured print.
