Glade Creek Grist Mill in Autumn No. 17
The Story: Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park is one of West Virginia’s most beloved and photographed landmarks. Although milling in the area ended decades ago, the state rebuilt this nostalgic mill in 1976 using parts from other historic grist mills, giving the structure its timeless Appalachian character. I arrived knowing I was likely late for peak color across the New River Gorge region. Much of the surrounding landscape had already dropped its leaves, but this small sheltered valley still held onto autumn. Under soft overcast skies, the yellows, oranges, and remaining greens seemed to glow with unusual richness. A long exposure rendered Glade Creek’s water as smooth, flowing ribbons, completing a peaceful scene where timing, weather, and a bit of good fortune came together beautifully. The Rest of the Story: This was a trip I nearly missed. Gallery commitments kept me home during the forecasted peak, and by the time I reached West Virginia, many of the larger vistas had already faded. In most places, the color was on the ground rather than in the trees. Then I arrived at Babcock State Park. The little hollow around Glade Creek Grist Mill, seemed protected from the schedule that had claimed the surrounding ridges. Rich fall color still clung to the trees, and the dreary clouds that might have disappointed some travelers became a gift for photography. That soft, flat light removed harsh contrast and allowed every leaf color to deepen. The rain also thinned the crowds, leaving the mill quieter than expected. Standing there beside the flowing water, I knew the conditions were special. Many photographers have captured this famous scene, but on that evening, the park offered me something unusually calm, colorful, and complete. In addition to this print being listed in Fayette County, West Virginia, I’ve also listed it under my nostalgic structures gallery. This gallery features scenes of yesteryear like water-powered grist mills, so check out my nostalgic mill art prints.
