Golden Hour Over Huffman Prairie No. 2

The Story:      Huffman Prairie serves as the epicenter for the discovery of aviation.  Following their 17 Dec 1903 demonstration, the Wright Brothers set up research in this field conducting 150 flights in 1904-1905 which refined the mastery of flight.  Today we call this former pasture the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and a National Historic Landmark.  Although the prairie resides on Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio it is preserved by the National Park Service in partnership with the Aviation Trail Inc. which promotes Dayton’s Aviation Heritage.   At right lies the, replica of the Wright Brothers 1905 hangar and at the pyramid structure at left is the catapult launcher that both commemorate the exact location of their early aviation accomplishments.   On this evening, late afternoon thunderstorms began dissipating allowing the day’s last rays to paint this historic land in warm golden colors. The Rest of the Story:  I chased this storm across Dayton.  It was as isolated thunderstorm.  It was also my first trip to Huffman Prairie in about 30 years.  Previous to this, one always had to access the historic Huffman Prairie once you were on Wright Patterson AFB.  Years later, the US National Park Service and the Department of the Air Force worked together to provide public access to this flying field at the end of an active runway.   Though I have been back on several trips, I’ve not caught an evening like this again. In addition to this image, I have another that has become a favorite titled:  Golden Hour Over Huffman Prairie No. 6. Looking for more scenes from Wright-Patterson AFB?
